PoCombi: Major update! Make all Poker Combinations now!

One of the things that came up the most when I asked people about PoCombi was the fact people wanted to make all combinations. Not only Pairs, Straights & Flushes but also Three of a Kind, Full House and Two Pair! This happened to be a bit more complicated than I hoped, because I didn’t want to add another button or action to the UI. This would slow down the gameplay too much.

I came up with a solution (available since version 1.22, it should be on Google Play soon): When you select Cards and make a Combination (for example a Pair) they will immediately fall down and you’ll get the points for a Pair (just like how it worked from the beginning). But you can still select more Cards while they are going down. So if a Pair goes down and you select a third Card of the same rank (to make a Three of a Kind), the Combination will update and you’ll receive the points for a Three of a Kind! Similarly, if you select a (suited) Pair but you actually wanted to make a Flush this is still possible. The only downside is that you have to be fast enough, but PoCombi is supposed to be fast-paced anyway 🙂

I also added some new Goals to the Levels, because this is now possible of course! Please let me know what you think of the new Gameplay and inform me if it’s working or that it’s maybe too weird and only works in my head 🙂

P.S. I had some difficulties getting the layout/UI pretty on all devices/phones, on some small screens some things might overlap but for the most part it should be okay now. Feedback is welcome of course 🙂

Tenuki Games: How to set up and promote your new company?

Hi all, time for another post! Through this blog I will also try to elaborate about how my brand-new company* is doing. Maybe this information can be of some use to others later! 🙂

I’m not (yet!) going viral, that’s a fact. There are many many (did I say many?) game development companies and therefore many many Android games that I have to compete against. In the first few weeks that PoCombi is available I’ve learned that the hard way; my Google Play Installs are not going as fast as I hoped. But I’m also very happy that I got some great feedback from my friends in The Netherlands, and that PoCombi even managed to get some people addicted for a while 🙂 I’m around 30 installs and 33 leader-board scores, so that’s not so bad for my first (Unity/Android) game ever! The next goal is to manage to get in the 50+ downloads category. Will you help me? 🙂

To market/promote my game I did quite a lot actually. I created a Twitter account (that has quite some followers, but I’m afraid most of them are promoting their own game as well), a Facebook Page (with 30+ Likes), this Blog and I submitted my game to several stores and app-listing-sites, such as Google Play, AppBrain and AndroidPit. At this point I’m not willing to invest money (I also think I need a better follow-up-game first), so I’ll try my luck with my time and devotion first! At least I’m having fun with it.

But, it’s a nice start and I will keep on developing and promoting PoCombi for sure, while thinking about new projects on the side. Stay tuned for more!

* “Tenuki Games” is actually just a name (and a “social media entity”) at this point, but I’m seriously considering making it official later. In some post later I will explain where the name Tenuki comes from 😉

PoCombi: How much are your Combinations worth?

To clarify a bit more about the game, here is a list of all Poker Combinations you can make in PoCombi and how many points you’ll get for them! Use it to your advantage 😉

Cards are ranked from Two to Ace. Higher ranked Cards give you more points, a Two is worth 2 points, a Three is worth 3 points and so on. The highest card, the Ace is worth 14 points. You can make the following Combinations:

  • A Pair: Two Cards of the same Rank. Gives you 3 points, and the points for each individual Card. That means a Pair of Deuces is worth 3 + 4 = 7 points and a Pair of Aces is worth 3 + 28 = 31 points!
  • A Straight: Five Cards in consecutive order. Gives you 60 points, and the points for each individual Card!
  • A Flush: Five Cards of the same suit. Gives you 80 points, and the points for each individual Card!
  • A Straight Flush: Five Cards in consecutive order and of the same suit. Gives you 300 (!) points, and the points for each individual Card!
  • A Royal Flush: A Straight Flush from Ten to Ace, gives you 400 points and the points for each Card, meaning a total of 400 + 10 + 11 + 12 + 13 + 14 = 460 points.

Currently it’s not possible to make other poker combinations like Three of a Kind, Full House and Quads. I’m working on a solution for this, but I want to keep PoCombi a fast-paced game, so I don’t like the idea of adding another button or action to select specific card in your storage. Ideas are welcome of course 🙂
